Victoria? What Secret are we talking about?
I don’t promote cancel culture for people, but for money-hungry brands who have no real human feelings? Yes.
……..and I feel like the time has finally come to cancel Victoria’s Secret.
I read this post on the LinkedIn page ‘The Female Influencer’ (which is a great page and you should check it out).
“Victoria’s Secret is replacing its Angels with new Ambassadors".
"The seven new members include soccer player Megan Rapinoe, model and body positivity advocate Paloma Elsesser, journalist and Girl Gaze founder Amanda de Cadenet, freeskiing World Champion Eileen Gu, actress and entrepreneur Priyanka Chopra Jonas, transgender model and activist Valentina Sampaio, and model and mental health advocate Adut Akech.
What do you think about Victoria’s Secret’s new approach?”
This news immediately made my blood boil. And at first, I wasn’t sure quite why. This news seems superficially progressive.. surely this is good news? But the more I started to properly digest this information, the more I realised it was not the announcement at all, it was who it was coming from.
Would you go to Regina George for a lesson on compassion, benevolence, and charity? No.
So why now, after so many years of insisting on such rigorous body types for their ‘Angels’, after years of setting women impossible (in most cases) aspirations and targets in order to be deemed angelic, why now are we suddenly flying in the complete opposite direction?
I am doubting Victoria's Secret as though it’s the bitchy girl at school, claiming to have turned over a new leaf.
Why now after all these years have you seen the light? Are you being forced? Who is behind this? Are you being paid??
In the case of VS, yes, they are ultimately a brand that exists to earn (they are being paid) and the new wave of inclusivity has forced them to adjust or they are at risk of becoming outdated.
Frankly, I’d rather give my money to brands that have developed and fostered an inclusive ethos authentically and sustainably, but that's just me. This modern wave of body positivity we have been crying out for is trying to overturn negative body image issues women have had to suffer with, which Victoria's Secret has previously promoted and cashed in on.
We needed this example to be SET years ago, and this total change of tune from the brand to stay current is pitiful.
If you are guilty of supporting Victoria's Secret, then I urge you to consider these alternatives:
- Cosabella (natural dyes, handcrafted in Italy, wide range of sizes)
